The Office of Training and Development is extremely pleased to be partnering with the Institute for Labor Studies and Research to again co-sponsor courses for state employees.  Please read the payment and registration information carefully if you wish to register for any of these courses.

All in a Day's Work: Maintaining & Improving Customer Relations - Fee $75

This course is designed to assist you to meet the challenges of providing excellent customer service when addressing customer needs. Attention will be given to such factors as attitude, communication skills, serving people with a variety of disabilities, and resource development. Through role play activities and discussion, you will build upon your current customer service skills and learn to effectively deal with challenging interactions. Note: You may not take this course for incentive credit if you have previously received an incentive credit for Quality Customer Service.

Professional Communications - Fee $75 

This exciting course will help you to sharpen several workplace communication skills absolutely necessary for success and effectiveness. We will concentrate on:
- Gender-based communication differences--We will examine how these differences affect both women and men, their relationships and team effectiveness, and conflict situations; how to create a professional persona; and how these affect leadership and management potential.
- Enhancing listening skills--We will review common distractions felt by the listener; the 6 keys of active listening; 8 tips for mastering your listening skills; and the types and emotional meanings we attribute to nonverbal messages.
- Intercultural communications--We will explore differences in cultural patterns, values, and types of groups affecting communication styles; perceptions of time, space and privacy; authority and status.
- Conflict resolution--We will review basic negotiation/mediation techniques and principles including separating the person from the problem, addressing interests not positions, and inventing options for mutual gain.

This experiential class requires interactive exercises and a final exam, to be eligible for incentive credit.

Effective Writing - Fee $75 - FULL

The ability to write clearly and concisely is a valuable asset. In this course, you will learn techniques to polish your writing with attention given to grammar, mechanics, and word choice; to tailor your writing for specific audiences; and to write effective and professional emails, letters, memos and reports. Feedback will be given on your specific writing needs through in-class and out-of-class assignments.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel - Fee $135

Learn the basics of this powerful and popular spreadsheet program. Create formulas, graphs and linked spreadsheets; copy and paste within and between spreadsheets; and learn many more features in the easy-to-use Excel environment. Knowledge of Windows is needed.

Microsoft Publisher - Fee $135 - CANCELED

This exciting new course will help you to create or modify a publication. You will learn how to add and edit text; insert, delete or move pages; formatting techniques using symbols and indenting; spacing between paragraphs; format and crop picture, wrap text around picture and insert Word Art; and you will create a newsletter, a web page and a web site. You should have adequate Word experience to feel comfortable with this new program. Participants taking this course for incentive credit must be currently planning or in the near future planning to design newsletters or web pages.

Access Fundamentals and Design - Fee $135

In this 15-hour course, you will learn the basic features of this powerful database program. You will learn how to search existing databases and how to create new databases; and how to design tables, forms, queries and reports. This class is designed for those who are currently using Access, but have had no prior training in Access, and for those who are in the process of designing (not just using) a new database. You will be creating a database as a hands-on focus of this class. As much information is covered in this class, out-of-class assignments will be given to practice application of the material. Thus, you must have Access on your computer - do not take this class if you are planning to use Access in the future.

Learn the basics of this powerful Windows word processing program. Learn how to create, edit, and print documents; import graphics; print labels; and use the mail merge function. Use Word’s many formatting features to improve the way you communicate.

Payment & Registration:

1. Personal checks should be made out to ILSR (Institute for Labor Studies and Research) and mailed, with your registration form, to OTD.

2. To pay by credit card:

 a. Call ILSR (463-9900) and provide them with your credit card information. Be sure to tell them which course you are paying for. They will notify OTD that you have paid for the course.

 b. You must still register for the course with OTD, by sending or faxing your registration form to us.

3. If a state agency is paying, only a Direct Pay Order (DPO) will be accepted. The original DPO should be processed per normal. A signed copy of the DPO, and your registration form, must be sent to OTD to reserve a seat in the course you want.

4. A registration form must accompany your payment - it is available from the OTD website.

NOTE: Registration or CS365 forms received without payment will not reserve a seat in the class.

Incentive Credit:

For state employees interested in incentive credit, all rules regarding each employee s eligibility will apply. For example, the course must be "directly related to the employee s job duties" and be the appropriate level for those duties. CS365 forms requesting incentive approval must be received by OTD 7 days prior to the start of the course. Each course must be at least 15 hours. If you do not receive verification from OTD that your incentive credit request has been approved, it is your responsibility to check the status of your request, and insure that OTD receives it.
